Building Beds 4 Kids is one of the local groups that Richard Berkfield is involved in. BB4K builds basic wooden beds for kids who have no beds, and provides mattresses and bedding.
In the Tri-County area there are thousands of kids that do not have beds. These children share beds with family members, sleep on inflatable mattresses, couches or cots. Sadly, some sleep on bedding spread on the bare floor.
BB4K utilizes an all volunteer staff and workforce. 100% of tax-deductible contributions are used to purchase component materials, and in some cases mattresses and bedding if these are not available from other sources.
With the support of volunteers and the generosity of donors and sponsoring businesses, churches, other organizations and individuals, BB4K hopes to build and distribute approximately 125 to 150 beds each month.

Berkfield & Co was asked to participate in a contest sponsored by Citizen's Insurance Co entitled "Citizens Who Care." To participate, we were instructed to write up our favorite community service project and submit it for consideration.
Since 2009 we have grown and purchased nearly 60,000 pounds of fresh vegetables to be donated to Open Door Outreach Center. That's the project we submitted and it won! The prize was $250 from Citizens Insurance Co, which Berkfield & Co matched. Below is a photo of Richard Berkfield making the presentation to Karen L. Myers, Director of Open Door.
Also in Waterford, MI, Open Door is a 40 year old 501c3 tax deductible nonprofit that provides food, hygiene, clothing, household and resources on a monthly basis to low income men, women, children and seniors struggling to make ends meet.
More than 22,800 pounds of food (equaling 19,000 meals) is distributed to 311 local families each month in the community. Donations come from local churches, schools, civic organizations, business and individuals like you.

Richard Berkfield has been involved with the Pontiac Rotary for many years. He has twice served as President, spear-headed the Pontiac Scholarship Program as well as a Mentoring Program for Pontiac High School Students, and was one of the originators of the annual Career Day which exposes Junior High students to career options by visiting local businesses.
Another of his involvements is as Chairman of the Oakland Community College Foundation Board. This has been a very gratifying position that he has been honored to hold.
A pet project since 2008 has been our Community Garden. Planted and harvested each year by our office staff, all of the fresh vegetables from the garden are delivered twice per week during the growing season and donated to Open Door Resource Center in Waterford.
One of our latest garden improvements was installing raised beds. Richard engaged a local Boy Scout to help us out as one of his badge projects. He recruited his family and friends to execute the project and they did a great job!
This picture was recently taken at The Pontiac Lighthouse Walk for Hunger (rain or shine!) where Richard's fundraising efforts raised $6500 which was 20% of the overall amount raised.
